In designing relevant IT platforms and modern workplaces, it’s imperative to understand our clients’ business and industry as best we can.
Since we specialise in the hospitality and performing arts sectors, last month we were privileged to be guests at Stage Queensland’s Box Office and Marketing Network (BOMNet) Conference at the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre to learn as much as we could from these box office and marketing professionals.
It was fascinating to hear about how arts and conference centres of all shapes and sizes across Queensland from QPAC in Brisbane to USQ in Toowoomba develop and execute strategies to engage patrons, optimise communications channels, use social media, manage ticketing resale fraud and promote productions with ever-tightening budgets and resources. The box office and marketing specialists in these centres are some of the most innovative, creative and resourceful managers I’ve encountered from any industry.
Coming away from the conference, I learned three things:
- There remain significant gaps in ticketing regulation and processes through which secondary market ticketing fraudsters loiter. These must close with better, more sophisticated systems
- There is much work to do to smarten and tightly integrate CRM, ticketing, PoS and social systems to get a clearer, deeper understanding of loyal arts and convention centre patrons.
- Over the next five to ten years artificial intelligence (AI), citizen management and membership models will revolutionise this niche which will present significant risks and opportunities for software vendors, arts & convention centre managers and local councils.
It will be fascinating to observe how this sector will transform over the next decade.
